Alumni stories

University of Wolverhampton alumni are part of a special, often tight-knit community.

When students spend a significant time
studying a course that is likely to change their future for the better, many make lifelong connections that are a joy to revisit later down the road.

Here are some reunions and celebrations the university has seen alumni enjoy over
the past year.

Half a century after graduating

A group of alumni who took degrees in modern languages 50 years ago returned to Wolverhampton to celebrate the five-decade anniversary of their studies.

The 22 alumni plus partners, some of whom travelled from as far away as New Zealand, met with seven of their lecturers for the significant occasion.

The graduates visited City Campus for a tour as part of the reunion, where they discovered which of the campus’s features they recognised and which had changed over the years.

Steve Woods, one of the alumni, said: “Laughter and good times prevailed as they did all those decades ago.”

Law graduates catch up, 50 years on

Law degree graduates returned to campus half a century after gaining their qualifications.

13 alumni from the first ever cohort to study in the University’s School of Law in 1973 were taken on a tour of the current Law School and met with two of their former lecturers, John Ritson and Frank Sharman.

Michael Judkins, reunion organiser, said: “We had dinner reunions in 1979 and 1987 but, other than that, there had been no other organised gatherings over the years. None of us live locally and it would be fair to say that, amongst the 13 who attended, some had had no contact with anyone at all throughout the years.”

Alumni fly high in the Emirates

During a whistle-stop trip to the United Arab Emirates, David Wedge, deputy head of alumni relations, met some of the University of Wolverhampton’s most successful alumni.

Among these dazzling success stories were entrepreneur and philanthropist Deana Uppal, legal affairs compliance executive Analisa Mediano, technical director Husham Osman, general manager Sunil Edatharam Kunnath, and senior global marketing manager Marwan Nasry.

David said: “I have pride in knowing that we have some incredibly successful and impressive alumni living and working in the UAE.”

University celebrates international milestones in Hong Kong

The University of Wolverhampton has celebrated two significant international milestones in Hong Kong: marking 21 years since the formation of the Hong Kong Alumni Association, and its educational partnership with the CityU School of Continuing and Professional Education (SCOPE).

Students, staff, alumni and VIPs came together in celebration for an afternoon graduation ceremony at SCOPE, followed by an evening dinner hosted by the Hong Kong Alumni Association, where the longstanding partnerships were formally recognised and commemorated.

Civil engineers return to Wolverhampton for networking reunion

The university’s School of Architecture and Built Environment held a reunion event for civil engineering alumni at Springfield Campus.

The event saw graduates from across a range of years return to Wolverhampton with Class of 2023 graduates joining other alumni from many years back. The reunion involved a networking gathering over drinks and snacks, a tour of the Springfield Campus (which for some was their first time seeing the campus), and a series of talks by alumni in the profession.

Dr Alaa Hamod, head of the civil engineering department at the university, said: “The inspiring stories of our alumni are motivating for both our new graduates and current students.”

30-year pilgrimage

Four University of Wolverhampton alumni returned to the campus, marking the occasion at the Students’ Union where they spent much of their time as students.

Stuart Carter, who studied BA (Hons) English and Philosophy in 1994, joined fellow alums Balraj Sreenivasan, Michael Skey, and Nicholas Perham.

Stuart said: “Coming back to see where our friendship began was quite an emotional experience for everyone - it certainly doesn’t feel like 30 years ago!”
